BCBS coverage for lactation care

There have been many changes with lactation coverage over the past year. Right now, BCBS is not credentialing IBCLCs in Tennessee unless they hold another licensure.

What this means for mothers who work with us is that you will pay for your care up-front and request reimbursement with a superbill following your appointment (this is how we did things before big companies started billing out-of-network for care).

Of course each BCBS plan is different. So how can you check for coverage?

- Call the number on your card and let them know you will be seeing an IBCLC with East Tennessee Lactation.
- Share with them the codes we will be using: Most visits will use S9443 with diagnosis code z39.1
- Ask them how many visits you will have covered.

We are keeping a running list of how quickly and at what rate mothers are reimbursed. Right now, we are seeing it take anywhere from 1-4 weeks and have gotten 100% reimbursement for BCBS plans that cover lactation care. We will update you with any changes.
